Our September LaundryLove HB was sponsored by the people of St Wilfrid's and we had a number of volunteers from that local Episcopal church as well as a full complement of others who have discovered our program through our blog and word of mouth. It is a delight to find others who are so willing to put in a hard night's worth of sweat and laundry and meeting our group.
We had home-cooked pasta this time, provided by a couple of our long-term volunteers. The food was so good that one of the children from the Thai restaurant next door came by to try it out. Her father asked her why she ate with us since they have lots of food. She told him because it was good. Maybe it's also good because there are so many who share. He handed me my Thai tea and refused to take any money.
Another service has become a part of our monthly gathering. It started with one little boy getting a haircut at the barbershop next door and now people are stopping by and getting a haircut, food, laundry and a meal. Our little event is becoming more of an event all the time.
The line seems to grow every month. Many people we see at each event and then some only come once. Some we get to know well and other are like ghosts, showing up and then not being seen again. As with anyone we meet, with whom we form a connection, with whom we spend time, we wonder when someone we've known and come to care about disappears.
A month or so ago, some people came to see out LaundryLove from Thad's, an emergent church in Santa Monica. This past month, they started one of their own. Here's the announcement for their upcoming event.
The idea is simple. People who need help with their laundry bring their clothes. We provide soap, quarters, dryer sheets and conversation. Early in the evening, we distribute a bag of food and later on, we have food. No one is turned away and we all have a good time. If you would like to join us, the next LaundryLove HB is Wednesday, October 9 at 7:00 at the laundromat on the corner of Beach and Garfield, next to the Honey Baked Ham store. Come on down. Or if you feel inclined, there is a "donate" button on this page and you can contribute a couple of dollars for the cause. Thanks for following us. See you there!
