Connection

This afternoon, I listened to a talk by "G", as the gang members at Homeboy Industries call him, Fr. Gregory Boyle, and I am reminded again of why LaundryLove is so important to me.  In the beginning, we all yearned for a way to give back that was manageable and immediate and discovered that various, independent LaundryLoves existed across the country.  It is a simple idea.  Find a laundromat, contact the owner, find an evening when business is slow, gather some soap and quarters and get the word out to people who might need the service.  "We will provide the means for you to do your laundry."  That was 18 months ago and today, we are blessed to host a LaundryLove right in Huntington Beach.  Fr. Boyle says that our deepest yearning is for connection.  That is what we find at a laundromat in a strip mall in Huntington Beach.  We gather, we talk, we do laundry, eat pizza and dance to music selected by our youngest regular member, Damian.

Every second Wednesday, we find new friends, have new
experiences, connect with familiar faces.  This month, near the end of the evening, someone wandered in.  She didn't know that we were there that night, but felt as if a miracle had befallen her.  She had ten dollars in her pocket, only a car to live in, and an interview for a badly needed job at 9 the next morning.  "Could you help me?" she asked.  Of course, of course.  We chatted as the machines churned and she laundered her interview outfit.  We talked about bad choices and new beginnings.  We talked about hope.

Sometimes that's what we all get from LaundryLove, hope that we can connect, no matter where we live, no matter our burden or age.  The quarters drop in the machine, the scent of soap fills the air, and we dance.  We get "thank
you's", but the truth is, we get so much back.  We always let them know how much we enjoy seeing each other again.  Our deepest yearning is for connection.  As "G" says, there is no "us" and "them."  There is only "us."

If you feel moved, the "Donate" button will accept your PayPal contribution.  If you want to join "us," we will be back on the second Wednesday of June, the 12th, at the laundromat on the corner of Beach Blvd and Garfield in Huntington Beach, right next to a great Thai restaurant.  We'd love to see you.
