A petite, brown-haired woman treated each small spot on her white clothes. “I have to ride my bike,” she explains. “And I get so dirty.” She dipped a swab into bleach and carefully erased a stain. “This is my summer load. Happy Wednesday. This is such a blessing.” She continued in her rapid-fire speech and flashed a quick smile.
Another man came in with a duffel stuffed with laundry and filled up two washers and then removed his jacket and tossed it in as well.
On this first night, we had a decent cadre of volunteers, including outreach workers for families and homeless teens, but we would love to have more help. Guests who came were so excited to get their laundry done, they couldn’t wait to spread the news. In Santa Ana, where this group got its training, the place had been packed and people started getting in line by 2 PM. We look forward to our next event in Huntington Beach on February 8th and expect it to grow.
If you need your laundry done or if you want to come down and get to know your neighbors, we’ll be back on the second Wednesday of the month. We’ll be agitating and spinning and rocking to the oldies. We might even get a little laundry done!
