2nd Wednesdays at 7pm Beach Coin Laundry 19072 Beach Bl (x Garfield) Huntington Beach

Our first night!

On Wednesday, January 11 at a Laundromat on Beach and Garfield in Huntington Beach Thom’s hosted its inaugural night of Laundry Love. Nine people were able to complete the equivalent of 47 loads of laundry, with no cost to themselves.

A petite, brown-haired woman treated each small spot on her white clothes. “I have to ride my bike,” she explains. “And I get so dirty.” She dipped a swab into bleach and carefully erased a stain. “This is my summer load. Happy Wednesday. This is such a blessing.” She continued in her rapid-fire speech and flashed a quick smile.
A couple came in and washed blankets and towels, expressing their gratitude. We shared stories about pets and how it can be such a struggle to provide for their veterinary needs, yet how much we love them and they depend on us.

Another man came in with a duffel stuffed with laundry and filled up two washers and then removed his jacket and tossed it in as well.
Close to the end of the evening, a tall man ambled in, not knowing of the event, and was able to do his laundry for free. “This is wonderful!” He exclaimed as he quickly stuffed clothes into a couple of washers. He had an infectious smile and regaled us with stories about his sons and their accomplishments. “I lost everything to alcohol, car, family. But by the grace of God I’ve been sober now for two years.”

On this first night, we had a decent cadre of volunteers, including outreach workers for families and homeless teens, but we would love to have more help. Guests who came were so excited to get their laundry done, they couldn’t wait to spread the news. In Santa Ana, where this group got its training, the place had been packed and people started getting in line by 2 PM. We look forward to our next event in Huntington Beach on February 8th and expect it to grow.

If you need your laundry done or if you want to come down and get to know your neighbors, we’ll be back on the second Wednesday of the month. We’ll be agitating and spinning and rocking to the oldies. We might even get a little laundry done!
